Through my process of creating lots of pieces from upcycled denim, I have found a quick hack for deconstructing jeans. I like to deconstruct them from the threads rather than cutting them apart since there is less waste this way. Also, when you pull open the seams and hem on jeans, there is a nice shading effect that I find makes my NOORISM upcycled denim pieces special and unique.
I start with the seam ripper and open up the hem first. On Levi's, there's something called the chain stitch. You want to find the end of the chainstitch that easily unravels. Once you find this, you can just pull and the whole stitch will come out really quickly!
After pulling out the chainstitch, I usually use a seam ripper or a big pair of sharp fabric scissors to cut through the topstitch. The more you do it, the more you will figure out this process and the most efficient way that works best for you.
Also, when you're working with other types of garments, the process is similar. Just practice and keep doing it until you figure out what the best and most efficient deconstruction technique for that particular item.
